- LinkedIn Newsletter vs Email Newsletter
LinkedIn Newsletter vs Email Newsletter
Do you need one?
As of today, it cannot replace email newsletters. That is a fact.
But it is not entirely a bad idea to start a LinkedIn newsletter. Because they are different products.
While LinkedIn Newsletters are relatively new products, it has different benefits.
Ownership and Control
LinkedIn will never allow you to have the ownership of contact details. On the other hand, Email newsletters give you full ownership over your content and contacts. This means you have a more secure and customizable communication channel.
Simply put: If you get banned on LinkedIn you're gone.
Targeted Approach
LinkedIn doesn't allow you to tag subscribers, build automated sequences, etc.
It is not flexible. You cannot even Send DMs to your subscribers as of today.
But on email newsletter provider platforms, you cag your subscribers, and some of them are super advanced and easy to customize.
Visibility
Are you thinking of starting an email newsletter and want to be visible ASAP?
LinkedIn newsletters are more visible because;
LinkedIn suggests your Newsletter to relevant people
When you post you can share it publicly with your network
And the most important one;
You can get SEO benefits directly with LinkedIn newsletters.
Some email newsletters allow you to share your content under your custom domain, but sharing under LinkedIn's domain is different.
Deliverability
Deliverability and domain health can be a problem for email newsletters. You don't have this problem with LinkedIn Newsletters.
Depending on the notification settings of the users, they can receive your LinkedIn newsletter post in their inboxes if not, they get notified on the platform itself.
However, I have less open rates on my LinkedIn Newsletter.
I think the reason is that people check their emails every day. But not LinkedIn.
Internal Monetization Systems
Email Newsletter providers like beehiiv offer different internal monetization features.
You can see the offers you can get and implement the ad super easily in your post.
As of today, LinkedIn doesn't offer any monetization service for newsletters.
Setup
You can start your LinkedIn newsletter right away without needing any knowledge or manual work. However, there is almost no flexibility to customize.
Email newsletters are not hard to set up, but it might more time than you think.
Why LinkedIn Newsletter can be helpful? and for who
LinkedIn is actively recommending LinkedIn newsletters to its users.
It provides faster and better visibility so your subscriber base grows faster. On the other hand, you will probably never have ownership of the contact details of your subscribers.
Why it can't replace email newsletters? (as of today)
I think comparing email newsletters with LinkedIn newsletters is not entirely a correct comparison. I believe they are 2 different products.
The real benefit of having an email newsletter is having ownership of the contact details. LinkedIn will never allow you to have this.
How can you leverage both?
Yes, there are many ways of doing this.
You can use your LinkedIn newsletter to test if your newsletter idea is going to resonate with people as LinkedIn Newsletters grow faster.
Use the LinkedIn newsletter as a step to invite people to your email newsletter.
You can use your LinkedIn Newsletter as a separate communication channel
LinkedIn Newsletters can be discovered separately, so sometimes people discover you thanks to your newsletter.
You can send your offers to a different audience on your LinkedIn Newsletters.
My personal opinion is that the email newsletter is a must. LinkedIn Newsletter is nice to have as of today. But you will never know what LinkedIn is planning. I wouldn't be surprised if the LinkedIn advertising network starts to monetize it and help people monetize their newsletters.
The task of the Week
Question of the Week
Do you think LinkedIn will monetize Newsletters?
See you next week!
